DISCERNMENT COUNSELING
Discernment counseling was founded by Dr. William Doherty, PhD, a professor of Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota.
Discernment counseling is not couples therapy. There is no digging deeper or exploration to help the relationship.
DC is for couples to clarify how they want their relationship to proceed. Often ,one spouse is in and the other is out, or some variation of the two.
The end goal of Discernment Counseling is for the couple to decide which of three paths they want to take:
1. Keep the relationship as is.
2. Separate (structured) or divorce.
3. Take divorce off the table and commit to couples therapy for 6 months, then reevaluate their plan.
The sessions for DC are limited to 1 to 5 sessions, depending on how soon the couple gets clarity on how they would like to proceed. Each session is structured with time together, individual time, and time to report on what was learned during that session.
